Jute production is a major industry in West Bengal. Most of the mills in the state are concentrated along the banks of Hooghly river in Howrah, Hooghly, and North 24 Parganas districts.

Adamjee Jute Mill was a jute mill in Bangladesh. It was established in Narayanganj in 1950 by the Adamjee Group.It was the first jute mill in East Pakistan (present day Bangladesh). Gradually, the mill became the largest jute mill in the world, exceeding the jute mills of Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, and Dundee, Scotland. Economic instability related to the jute industry in West Bengal forced many of these mills to be shut down. A large number of people of Bhatpara commute to Kolkata for work and a few are engaged in small personal businesses within the locality.
